Why use Beard Wash?

Why use Beard Wash?

Guess what? If you have a beard, you should be using a specific beard wash or shampoo.

First things first: Beard Shampoo vs Beard Wash - what's the difference?

Great question - you’ll see many brands marketing beard shampoos as 'beard wash'. The fact is there’s really no difference between the two. We call our Moonshine Beard Co product Beard Wash but beard shampoo and beard wash are the same.

So now we’ve cleared that up, read on as we run through a few of the many benefits of beard wash (including why you shouldn’t use your regular supermarket head shampoo to wash your beard!)

Beard Wash can help soothe irritated skin

Beard hairs can easily become dry and brittle, especially if you don't have a regular beard care routine, or if you live in a drier climate. And when these dry, coarse hairs rub up against the skin on your face this can cause irritation, which can become pretty uncomfortable!

Also, if you use normal shampoo on your beard this can very quickly lead to beard itch and the dreaded BEARDRUFF!

This is where beard wash comes in. Moonshine Beard Co Beard Wash is packed full of ingredients high in hair and skin enhancing ingredients like jojoba, coconut and hemp oils (and more!) adding beard wash to your beard care routine will quickly give you results, soothing irritated skin and nourishing beard hair to help get your beard growth back on track.

Beard Wash can soften beard hair

When new beard hairs grow, they emerge from your follicles sharp at the ends - this is especially true for newer and shorter beards. These sharp little buggers can quickly lead to beard itch, but the good news is - this can be avoided!

You guessed it - regular hair shampoo will only make the problem worse. If you want to relieve that itch, you need a proper Beard Wash. The natural ingredients we mentioned earlier will soften your beard hairs as well as making them straighter and less unruly.

A good Beard Wash is specifically made to cleanse and moisturise your beard

Normal hair shampoo is not good for your beard, and you’ve probably guessed we definitely don't recommend using it! Hair shampoo is made for your scalp which has much tougher skin than the skin on your face. While your scalp can cope with the harsher ingredients in hair shampoo, your face is quite a bit more sensitive. Hair shampoo contains a detergent called Sodium Lauryl Sulphate that will actually strip away the natural oils and moisture from your skin and beard, resulting in your beard becoming dry and brittle

So the best thing for your skin is to use a product such as Moonshine Beard Co Beard Wash that is made to look after the skin on your face whilst keeping your beard clean by using gentler, naturally sourced ingredients - none of those nasty chemical detergents.

And as we mentioned before, using hair shampoo on your face is a fast way to get beard itch and dandruff.

Moonshine Beard Co Beard Wash is formulated to help retain the natural oils your skin produces as well as lock in moisture and gently clean your beard, leaving you with a healthy, well nourished beard that looks and feels great. Especially when followed up with Moonshine Beard Co Beard Oil

Beard Wash can help fight against acne and ingrown hairs and clear clogged pores

Our bodies naturally produce dead skin cells, which can contribute to problems like acne, irrigation and ingrown hairs, enough of an issue for clean-shaven men - and they have the option of exfoliation. When you grow a beard these dead skin cells have nowhere to go, so they can become trapped, clogging pores and causing issues that none of us want.

By washing your beard with a good quality Beard Wash 2-3 times per week, you’ll help to combat that skin cell build-up.

Facial hair follicles produce Sebum, a natural oil which helps to keep shorter hairs hydrated and healthy. If you don’t wash the underlying skin regularly enough that sebum oil builds up - and bacteria love it! If Sebum builds up too much this can result in an infection that can cause irritation and beard dandruff. By using a high quality Beard Wash you can gently remove excess oil build-up, helping to prevent bacterial infection that can cause acne and dandruff.

Is it worth it?

Investing in a specific Beard Wash is well worth it. From softening beard hair to reducing beard itch and soothing irritation, beard washes are full of benefits that your beard needs and will love!

Depending on the length of your beard and how often you wash it, a 200g bottle of Moonshine Beard Co Beard Wash should last you anywhere from 3-8 weeks.

Should you wash your beard every day? Probably not. Washing your beard too often, even with a proper beard wash, can be almost as damaging as not washing it at all.

The length and fullness of your beard come into play when determining how often to wash it. A fuller beard with coarse hair only needs to be washed every three to four days. A thin beard benefits from being washed every two to three days to make it look fuller. Also, If you have oily skin, you’ll want to wash it every second day to keep excess oil from building up. If you have drier skin, you’ll want to go three days between beard washings to keep your skin and beard supple.

Based on your washing it twice a week, here's how long you could expect it to last (roughly) based on your own beard length:

Beard Length

Lifespan of your shampoo

Short (less than 1 inch)

7-8 weeks

Medium (~2 inches)

5-6 weeks

Long (~3-4 inches)

4 weeks

XL (5+ inches)

3 weeks

So in short, it’s a wise move to look after your skin and beard with a quality Beard Wash from Moonshine Beard Co!!
