Beard Oils are one of the most important parts of your beard care routine - in fact it may well be the most essential step. But what does beard oil actually do? This Beard Care Blog will delve into these questions and a bit more!
Firstly - what is beard oil?
By definition, beard oil is a liquid form moisturizing product for your beard. It’s main purpose is to nourish and hydrate your facial hair and to help replenish the moisture lost throughout the day and during the washing process. Moonshine Beard Co Beard Oils are made with a base of hydrating natural carrier oils such as jojoba, sweet almond oil and argan oils (and others), as well as various combinations of essential or fragrance oils.
So what does Beard Oil do?
Regular dandruff is bad enough, but white flakes on your clothes from your beard is even worse. One of the best ways to prevent this is regular and proper use of beard oil. A good quality beard oil will be effective in preventing the skin under your beard from drying out, helping prevent those unsightly, itchy flakes from forming in the first place.
The hydrating properties of beard oil assist in preventing your beard from becoming dry and it can even bring a brittle, dry beard back to life. When correctly applied to a slightly moist beard from root to tip, it provides nourishment for the skin underneath your beard just as much as for the beard itself. This is also a prevention factor for split ends, keeping your beard looking full and healthy. Moonshine Beard Co beard oil, used properly, is your best bet to maintain a healthy, soft, full-looking beard.
Most (not all) beard oils have essential or fragrance oils added to assist in hydrating your beard. These oils are very aromatic, often used to create colognes and aftershaves and in massage oils. Good blends will give some really pleasing scents giving your beard oil a dual purpose - use them as a cologne!
How do I use beard oil?
Whilst some beard oil bottles have a dropper, Moonshine Beard Co Beard Oils have a spray head. We prefer this as it means you don't have to open the bottle to dispense the oil, extending the lifespan of the oil and the essential oils it contains. It also means you can get every last drop out of the bottle!
Beard oil can be used daily. It’s best to apply it to a damp beard, ideally just after a shower after a quick towel-dry. You could also apply just before bedtime to allow your beard to absorb the hydrating carrier oils overnight.
Give a couple of squirts of your chosen beard oil to the palm of your hand (more if your beard is longer), then rub your hands together to warm the oil and spread the product all the way to your fingertips.
Your beard should fully absorb your beard oil after 5-10 minutes of applying it. If your beard still feels greasy after this you’re probably using too much. Massage the beard oil all the way from the ends of your facial hair to the roots of your beard to allow the oil to penetrate into your hair follicles and your skin.
Using your palms, smooth the oil over the outer layer of your beard, and your fingers to apply your beard oil to your moustache. If there’s any more oil on your hands, run your fingers through the hair on your head - the oil will benefit your scalp too! Follow up by brushing the oil completely through your beard with either a beard comb or good quality beard brush.
In Summary
Beard Oil should be the first step in your beard maintenance routine. Not only will it help hydrate your hair and skin, if you choose a fragranced oil it’ll smell great too!
